It is time for our first Karate demonstration of the new year. We have been asked by Catholic Charities of Broome County to do a demonstration for the employees of Catholic Charities at St. Cyril’s church off Clinton Street in Binghamton on March 24th at 11:00 AM. We will be in their gym where the wedding receptions and such are held. It’s easy to find. At the Sunrise Diner, turn right and go around the back of the church to the parking lot and you are there..

We will be doing warm-ups, Kata, Self defense, and break boards. The usual stuff. At their request we will not use weapons. As usual, we always have a good time, so please, please…come if you can. You just might enjoy it.

Michael Kushner (1919 - 2010)

Michael Kushner, of Binghamton, passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2010. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank Kushner and Susan Maczan; wife, Virginia; siblings, Frank Kushner, Agnes Valada, Anne Tanch, and Mary Miller. He is survived by his favorite pet Benji; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Jeanette Kushner, daughter, Karen Leiser; grandchildren; Nick Kushner, Jenny Kushner, Christy Kushner, Mike Kushner, Courtney Kushner, Ethen Leiser, and Katarina Leiser. Michael was baptized on November 23, 1919 and married Virginia Osbourne on February 15, 1947 at St. Michael's Church by Father Michael Tidick. He served in the US AirForce as a sergeant during WWII with many combat recognition awards. He was president of Campbell Distributing Company distributing beer, soda and other assorted beverages for over 30 years. He was a 4th degree black belt in karate, which he practiced for over 30 years. He was very generous to his family, neighbors and business associates. Mike served on the board of Directors of many organizations including his favorite the original commission to build the NYSEG stadium in the city of Binghamton. He was responsible for the building of recognition and popularity of Hidy Ochai's Karate during the late 1960's and 1970's due to his public relations and business expertise, later doing the same for his son's FMK Karate. The family would like to express a sincere thanks to Mike's neighbors on Delmar Street for their help and helping oversee his care for many years. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Wm. R. Chase & Son Funeral Home, 737 Chenango Street, Port Dickinson, with Father James Dutko, officiating. Burial will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Michael Church, 280 Clinton Street, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Driving Directions:
Take Route 17 to the 2nd Exit (Exit 64) and cross over the river on the new bridge. Straight ahead will be a tall building...the Owego Courthouse. Bear to your right and go around the courthouse, turn left onto Route 17C. Go 0.2 Miles and turn right onto McMaster St. One short block turn left onto Elm St. The rear entrance is at the end of the street. Our demonstration will be in a tent next to the 4H building. FMK members…We have been invited to attend this event and do a demonstration including weapons, and get the people watching to participate in punching, kicking, and if there is enough time maybe some simple, basic self defense. Other groups include Owego Gymnastics, Tai Chi, and a Tai Quan Do Instructor teaching punching mitts.

This event has grown to include over 50 agencies and radio remotes. Their theme is “health is not a spectator sport”. This event has been going on for a few years now and has been quite successful. The event will be at the Tioga County Fairgrounds (Marvin Park) on Route 17C, on the right side of the road immediately west of Owego. It's easy to find. Take the 2nd exit off Route 17 and go over the new bridge, go around the courthouse, and get on 17C. It's not even a mile from there.

They have a large conference room on the right side of the building.
The library is on the parkway to the left of the Skylark Diner.
We usually demonstrate to a room full of families.

We have been invited again to do a demonstration for the fair goers at 1:00 PM
on the Midway, weather permitting. If it rains, we will do the demonstration
inside the first building like last year. This year we will do it all...
warm ups, kata, self defense, punching and kicking pads, and a weapons demo too.

We will probably go in the first entrance like last year and go in the gate
on that end of the fair. We get in free so wear your FMK Karate Gi!

Karate Weekend May 21 to 23 at Roberson Museum and Science Center

To all FMK Karate Members…This is a biggie folks! We have been invited to do a Demonstration at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 22, 2010. We are going to do warm-ups, Kata, self defense, demonstrate weapons (your choice), and break boards. With the time we have left, we will encourage the kids and adults to punch and kick the pads, and maybe some basic self defense. There will be a large amount of families visiting, so we want to put on a good show. Your help is requested to make this a complete success.

Thomas Jefferson School - Learn a New Thing Day Friday, May 14th, 2010

We have been doing "Learn a New Thing Day" for several years now at several schools in the
valley. Thomas Jefferson, at 151 Helen Street in Binghamton, is the next one on Friday,
May 14th. We should arrive around 8:30 AM and enter the school via the Minerva Street
entrance. We will be directed to the cafeteria where refreshments and snacks will be
set up both before and after the sessions. Parking is available on the side streets.
Once in the cafeteria we will be given info regarding session times, how many students
in each session, and where we will be doing our demo's. Each session will be 30 minutes,
then the students have 5 minutes to go to their next session. We will be doing 3 sessions. There is a lot going on such as crafts, music, dance, art , etc.. Based on previous years, we should be all done around 11:00 AM.

This is another opportunity for FMK to be seen, heard, and showing what we can do.
We need people to help make this another successful event.

event to succeed.

EARTH FEST 2010

FMK Karate was at Earth Fest at MacArthur School last year at this time and we had a very fine day. The exhibits were great, and we put on a very impressive demonstration to a large group of adults and children. Many, many people stopped at our table and asked us a lot of questions about what, how, why, and just about anything else you could think of pertaining to Karate. It was a great day.

We have been asked again to participate at Earth Fest this year on Saturday, April 24th from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM. The event this year will be held at MacArthur School again on Vestal Avenue on Binghamton’s South Side. We will set up our table Saturday morning around 9:30 AM. Our demonstration will be at 1:00 PM outside if it is not raining, or inside in the gym if it is raining. Since this is a school, and there is a 0 tolerance for weapons there, according to the promoters, we will not be using weapons.

We will do warm up exercises, demonstrate Katas, a self defense demonstration and break boards. The whole demo should be about 30 minutes. Again, we really need your help to make this another success!

We will need help at the table and in the demonstration. If you are planning on attending, please let Sensei or me know. This demonstration is open to all students at FMK Karate. Please…..get involved, then you’ll find out how much fun it is!

participate in the Adopt-A-Highway pickup and the Subway
Fundraiser on the same day. The litter pickup starts at
9:00 AM at the Dojo, and the Subway event is all day,
so work up your appetite and buy some good food at Subway,
because FMK Karate gets a percentage of the days sales.

FMK did this last year and we had really good exposure.
Just about the whole school population past by us at our
table in the gym. We did 2 demonstrations, and fielded
a lot of questions. About 1000 students and staff will
see us. At the table, we have our picture display, a
laptop Power Point presentation, flyers, and free
asses. This event is from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

We will demonstrate at 10:00 AM and again at 1:00 PM.
Those members that participate with me will receive a
free lunch between 11:00 AM and Noon.
Come and join us and have some fun!
Meet some nice people while promoting
our great FMK karate school.

Susquehanna Nursing Home, on Riverside Drive in Binghamton, is celebrating Golden Days
on the 16th. They have many things going on that day and we have been invited to do a

FMK has been invited by the Principle of the Middle school
to this Wellness day to talk to the 7th and 8th graders about Karate,
what, how, why, and answer any questions about our art. We will have
several 40 minute sessions with about 50 kids at each session.

We will do the usual stuff… …demonstrate Kata, perform self defense,
and also break boards. We will not be using weapons because of a
strict school policy against that. We plan on having a lot of fun,
and the principal is excited that we are coming. Please…we could

All School Members Please make time to attend this important event!

This is an annual event at FMK. We have a professional Photographer at the dojo
for individual pictures as well as a group photo of the entire membership. The
photographer will start at 4:30 PM to photograph the kids and the group picture
will be around 5:50 PM. After the group photo, the members can get in on the
individual pictures until it’s finished. Please, please…plan on being there
at least for the group photo as we have been doing this for many years, and
it has been successful.

Folks, This year FMK is proud to announce we have joined the Bon-Ton Community Day again with many other organizations to raise funds for charity. Since 1999, this event has raised over 53 million dollars for charitable organizations. Community Day will be on November 14^th. FMK Karate has done charitable events in the past and we enjoy helping others.

We will be selling Coupon Booklets you can use when shopping at the Bon-Ton on November 14th. Each member will have the opportunity to sell these coupon booklets for $5 each. Sensei and I have 250 Coupon booklets to sell. For your $5 dollars you get the booklet with a $10 off coupon so you recoup your $5 right away. You also get a 30% off coupon on selected items, 6-20% off coupons you can use in the store, plus Community day bonus buys for this day only. The money raised for the charities comes through the manufacturers and suppliers of their products as well as the Bon-Ton itself. This activity has been going on in our area for several years now, and we are getting involved again at Bon-Ton’s request.

With the 250 coupon booklets Sensei and I have, we stand to make some money for the FMK Karate school through the Bon-Ton. If we sell all of these, I can get more from the Bon-Ton. This is a charity event that will act as a fundraiser for our school also. This money can be used for Maintenance and upkeep of our fine school, or purchase new equipment, help defray the utility costs of our school, or any number of other useful purposes.

We need this, my friends! Will you help us to come out on top??

We will be participating in a Health and Fitness Fair at the Hilltop Retirement Facility on Deyo Hill Road in Johnson City on September 17th, a Thursday. FMK was there last year and we had a good time. They invited us back again. We will man a table from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM with our display and laptop presentation, flyers, free passes, etc. Also at 11:00 AM we will be doing a demonstration. There are 325 residents at Hilltop, and 425 employees, so our exposure will be great. We will be doing warm-ups, Katas, self defense, and breaking boards. We will not be doing weapons. Come on…join us and have some fun. The folks at Hilltop are looking forward to seeing us. We will be in the main dining room just inside the main entrance.

Karate lessons will take place at 5 :30 pm every Friday
for the next 10 weeks!

Fmk has a busy weekend on September 12th and 13th with 2 demonstrations, the first being the Conklin Fair at the fairgrounds by the river on Saturday, the 12th at 1:00 PM. We have been there many times in the past and are looking forward to it again this year. We will do the usual demo stuff and with weapons too and board breaking. We don’t care what belt rank you are…you are invited to participate in any demonstration we do. It’s a lot of fun. We need your help to make this event a success.

Hey! Put this on your calendar of things to do!! Sunday, September 13th, at 1:30 PM. The Broome County Workers annual picnic is at Cole Park, and we have been asked again to do a Karate Demonstration for them. We have done this for several years now, and it’s fun. Just go into Cole Park, and there will be a sign telling you where the picnic is. If you have a favorite weapon, bring it and demonstrate with us. We will be doing warm-ups, Katas, self defense, weapons, and breaking boards. It’s really a good time. Come and join the fun…please.

Bon-Ton Community Day, November 14th, 2009

Folks, This year FMK is proud to announce we have joined the Bon-Ton Community Day again with many other organizations to raise funds for charity. Since 1999, this event has raised over 53 million dollars for charitable organizations. Community Day will be on November 14th. FMK Karate has done charitable events in the past and we enjoy helping others.

We will be selling Coupon Booklets you can use when shopping at the Bon-Ton on November 14th. Each member will have the opportunity to sell these coupon booklets for $5 each. Sensei and I have 250 Coupon booklets to sell. For your $5 dollars you get the booklet with a $10 off coupon so you recoup your $5 right away. You also get a 30% off coupon on selected items, 6-20% off coupons you can use in the store, plus Community day bonus buys for this day only. The money raised for the charities comes through the manufacturers and suppliers of their products as well as the Bon-Ton itself. This activity has been going on in our area for several years now, and we are getting involved again at Bon-Ton’s request.

With the 250 coupon booklets Sensei and I have, we stand to make some money for the FMK Karate school through the Bon-Ton. If we sell all of these, I can get more from the Bon-Ton. This is a charity event that will act as a fundraiser for our school also. This money can be used for Maintenance and upkeep of our fine school, or purchase new equipment, help defray the utility costs of our school, or any number of other useful purposes.

Thanks to Joe Di Mascio, on August 22nd, FMK Karate will receive a whopping 25% of the day’s total sales from 11:00 AM until 5:00 PM at the Subway restaurant in Hillcrest at Chenango Street and Nolan Road. This is the 2nd time this has happened. Joe, one of our fine black belts, is an employee at Subway and made these arrangements for us, so lets all grab our families, and go to Subway to help this great cause! Hope to see you there!!

This was another first time for FMK. I was really surprised at how many people were there on Saturday morning. I was also surprised at the number of FMK members that participated…14 of us

We had a number of the people watching us, and the event organizer was impressed with us. We did warm up exercises, did some katas, then my friend Abdul Quavi did a solo Kata. We then demonstrated self defense, and punched and kicked the small and large pads. Some of us demonstrated weapons, and we finished by breaking boards.

We all had a fine time, and the weather was perfect for 10:00 in the morning. The event organizer wants us back again next year. I told her to let us know and we’ll be there. If you are a member of FMK, and want to further your adventure in Shotokan Karate, please join us at the next demonstrations. We do them all year long, and they come with great benefits to you!!

We, at FMK Karate, were invited to do a demonstration at the Broome County Fair for the first time this year and we jumped at the chance. The fair attracts a very large number of people of all ages and that was true on Saturday when we were there. There were so many people, the fair workers had to close all the parking facilities because they were full.

Our demo was in the entertainment building and just before we started, they announced that FMK was there. We had a laptop running our power point presentation, flyers were available, and we also had some free passes to hand out. Present from FMK were:

The FMK members did warm up exercises, performed Katas, demonstrated self defense, practiced with weapons, and ended up breaking boards. The Fair official that invited us was impressed enough that she said they want us to come back each year in the future, which we plan on doing.

Folks, we need more members getting involved in these demonstrations. Please consider this when we announce the demonstrations ahead of time, and give it a try. We need your participation.

Karate Demonstration at The BROOME COUNTY FAIR!

August 1st at 6:00 P.M.

FMK had been invited to do a Karate demonstration on Saturday night, August 1st, from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the entertainment building

For an entire hour! We will also man a table with our display board, fliers, free passes, etc..

FMK Karate will do warm up exercises, Kata, self defense, weapons, and break boards. We will also get the audience involved in punching and kicking the pads. We plan on having a good time as usual, and would really like as many of our great membership to attend.

The entertainment building is the first building right after the school at the south entrance to the fairgrounds.

Come out and show your support!!

Hillcrest Summer Fun Demonstration

Folks, we have done this for the kids 2 or 3 times before and it’s a lot of fun, the parents and grandparents like it too. We need your help for this to make it successful. If you would like to participate, please let us know so we can plan accordingly. Summer Fun is held at the Booster day field near the fire station.

BOY SCOUT DAY CAMP DEMONSTRATION JULY 2ND AND 3RD , 2009

To all FMK Karate members…Another first my friends. Thanks to our Black Belt, Mark Conlon, we have an opportunity to work with the Boy Scouts in that they have asked us to present a program on Medieval Japan and Martial Arts, weapons, etc. We have worked with the Girl Scouts several times, but this is the first time with Boy Scouts.

On July 2nd at 7:00 PM, we will be doing a karate demonstration for the Boy Scouts at Cole Park on Colesville Road. We need your help to make this successful.

On July 3rd we will be doing seven-40 minute sessions with 12 Scouts in each session. This will include showing and explaining all the weapons we train with, and having the Scouts handle them. Also we will demo and have the Scouts do kicking, punching, blocking, and explain the difference between fighting and self-defense. We could use a lot of help from you in this area.

Also on July 3rd from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM Sensei will have about ½ hour to discuss the way of the Samurai and Martial Artist.

Please…we need your involvement in this to make this happen. A lot of members helping would show our strength, commitment, and belief in what we do. Please let Sensei or me know if you plan on attending so we can plan accordingly.

Karate Demonstration for Giant Markets Picnic

June 14^th

Ladies, gents, boys and girls….ready for some fun?? This demonstration is a biggie for FMK and the Giant Markets. They have employees from all of their stores at the Sacred Heart Picnic Grounds up Castle Creek Road (Route 11 North) from Front St. 4.3 miles, turn left on Brooks Road and the picnic grounds is immediately on the right. I witnessed this demonstration for 2 years before I just had to join FMK because of the enthusiasm from the members of this great Karate School.

The Demonstration will start around 1:00 PM and last about 30 to 45 minutes. We will do exercises, Kata, self defense, demonstrate weapons, and break boards. All belt ranks are encouraged to participate. After we do our demo, the Giant invites us to eat for free, so it’s always great. If you come early, there is always a police dog demonstration that is quite impressive.

Chenango Valley Schools - Port Dickinson School

Pre-K Picnic on the School Playground

This is another first folks. We have not done our thing at the Port Dick school before, so we really want this. We are invited to do a Karate demonstration for the Pre-K children and their families on the playground during their picnic on June 10^th, a Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM. We will not be using weapons since this is a school and there is a zero tolerance for weapons. It should be a lot of fun. If you plan on attending, please let Sensei or me know so we can plan accordingly.

Saturday June 20th at 9:00 a.m Adopt A Highway Litter Pickup!

It will take place on Saturday June 20th at 9:00 a.m.!
We will meet in front of the Dojo that morning.
Make sure that children are accompanied by a parent or guardian

Frank Kushner of FMK has received two extremely prestigious honors.
First off, he has been selected to the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Grand Master Frank Kushner has been doing Martial Arts for 40 years and has had his school for 19 years.

FMK Karate is located at 782 Chenango Street, Binghamton N.Y. for the past 16 years, and has become a place to learn and make friends for hundreds of adults and children. One of the only buildings in the country, that was designed and built with the training of karate in mind.
This institution has a purpose and philosophy of non-violence while perfecting one's mind and body.

FMK Karate was one of the many organizations that participated in BOCES 3rd Annual Wellness Day on 4-27-2009.

Karate Demonstration and Teaching Basics at Chenango Valley Middle School

I know it’s a little early for some folks, but it will be worth it. FMK has been asked to do a demonstration for the middle school students at CV prior to their going to State Park for the day.

There will be a lot of students involved, so we want to make a good impression. Please…we need your help to make this a success. We don’t care what belt rank you are, come and have a good time.

Memorial Day Parade - Monday, May 25^th - 2:00 PM

FMK has again been asked to participate in the annual Memorial Day Parade in Binghamton. We are asked to be there at Walnut Street on the West side at 1:30 PM.
